In practice since 1987, Dr. Ira Papel is board certified in both Facial Plastic Surgery and Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
He received his B.A. from the Johns Hopkins University, and then earned a M.D. from Boston University School of Medicine. This was followed by a residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. A fellowship in Facial Plastic Surgery was then completed at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).
Dr. Papel is an Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins. He is actively involved in surgical training of medical students, residents, and fellows. Dr. Papel serves as co-director of the Facial Plastic Fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He has been invited to serve as a Visiting Professor at more than 30 universities in the U.S., Europe, Middle East, Mexico and South America. His textbook, Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery entering its 3rd edition, has become a standard text for surgeons throughout the world.
Dr. Papel believes that advances in medical practice and academic excellence should be combined for optimum patient care. He has published extensively in surgical journals and textbooks, and is invited to make frequent scientific presentations in national and international forums.
Surgical privileges are maintained at the Facial Plastic Surgicenter, Greater Baltimore Medical Center, and The Johns Hopkins Hospital.
